PY Numberplates, the home of UK car registration numbers

Here we try to answer some common number plate questions we are so often asked

Q What happens to my present number plate?

A Nine times out of ten the original number will be re issued to your vehicle as and when you come to transfer your new cherished number to another vehicle or retention document. If you want to guarantee that you will get your original plate back you will have to retain it, we can do this for you all in one go if you forward a cheque to us payable to Department of Transport for the sum of £105.

Q What if my documents are at DVLA at the time of purchase?

A No problem, providing we receive the balance payment within 7 days we can either retain the number or leave the number on the donor vehicle until you are in receipt of the necessary documentation ( if within 4 weeks). If we need to retain the number the Department of Transport will charge a further £25.00.

Q What happens to my payment if I change my mind before the transfer and no longer want the registration I have reserved?

A The payment is lost. We do not offer any refunds if you change your mind or cancel the order.

Q Does the price include the vehicle?

A No. You are merely acquiring the right to use the registration number on your own vehicle after it has been transferred from the present one.

Q Are number plates good investments?

A Values of all car number plates have increased over the past few years and there is no reason why this trend should not continue.

Q If the transfer should fail do I get a full refund?

A Yes. If we can not find you an alternative, we guarantee to give you an instant refund in the event of a transfer failing. However our liability is strictly limited to a full refund ONLY and no claims for damages, interest on monies paid or any other expenses will be entertained. If the failure is due to you not supplying the necessary documents within the period of time required by us, no refunds will be given. Issue of the new V5 by DoT Swansea shall be deemed proof of acceptance and conclusion of the transfer. PERSONALLY YOURS liability is confined to the initial transfer only.

Q When can I put my new number plates on?

A Number plates MUST not be displayed on the vehicle until advised by either PY Numberplates or Department of transport.

Q How do you know if a number is genuine?

A The donor vehicle is inspected by The Department of Transport to ensure that it is the genuine vehicle and registration. We take care of all this. If any discrepancy is discovered the transfer will fail. However, it should be noted that The Secretary of State for Transport or their Agents the DoT (as keeper of the records) may revoke the relevant right to a registration mark at any time for whatever reasons, and Personally Yours Registrations cannot be held responsible in the very unlikely event of this occurring.

Q Does the recipient vehicle need to be inspected by the authorities?

A No. However, if for example, there was a change of construction of the vehicle the authorities may then want to inspect it. We would notify you if this was necessary.

Q How long does a transfer take?

A The average time scale is three to eight weeks but may take a little longer if for example are awaiting the donor/recipient V5 from dvla. We ensure that every transfer is expedited as quickly as possible. In some instances transfers can take longer and the time period cannot be guaranteed, but we would keep you informed of the progress in any event. However, it should be noted that the transfer cannot be started until we receive the requisite documents.

Q What happens if I need to tax or MOT my vehicle whilst the transfer is being processed?

A This presents no problem for us; you simply send the tax application to us, ensuring that you state the old registration number on the application form. If it is just a case of a new MOT being obtained, again you ensure that the garage MOT the vehicle under the old mark and send the certificate to us immediately.

Q What if I want my new number on retention?

A This can be arranged without any problem, but once you have the certificate you the new nominated party will be responsible to contact us for any extensions or changes on the certificate. PERSONALLY YOURS may be able to help but can not be held responsible for any expired certificates. If the V750 or V778 certificate expires you will lose the number. It should be noted that the nominee is not the grantee and PERSONALLY YOURS can not be held responsible should DoT Swansea withdraw the number any time for whatever reason.

Q Is it possible to transfer a registration to a vehicle registered with a "Q" mark?

A Transfers are not possible to "Q registered vehicles.

Q Do I have to keep the registration on my vehicle for any specific time period before I can transfer it again and how do I do this?

A There is no time restriction and transfer is a simple procedure which can be applied for yourself. Your cherished number plate can be transferred to a vehicle of your choice. The vehicle will then be assigned a replacement registration number appropriate to its year.
